Cultivating future ag leaders: St Bedes College students headed to the Junior Young Farmers of the Year Grand Final

Watermetrics proudly sponsors competition that is the future of agribusiness

As a key sponsor of the Junior Young Farmers of the Year competition, the team at Watermetrics is pleased to announce that two students from St Bedes College have secured a spot in the highly anticipated FMG Junior Young Farmers of the Year Grand Final. Michael Blunt and Zander McCloy will be competing in the Tasman Junior Young Farmers of the Year final for 2023.

Modelled after the FMG Young Farmer of the Year contest, the FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year competition offers a similar format. It serves as an avenue for TeenAg Clubs in high schools nationwide to introduce teenagers to the diverse realms of agriculture, food, and fibre, encompassing everything from farming, growing, and fishing to horticulture and more.

Within their respective regions, TeenAg Club members can participate in teams of two in the FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year contest. These dynamic pairs engage in a series of eight theoretical and practical modules, covering a wide range of topics. Past modules have explored animal anatomy, fencing, meat cut identification, gun safety, equine studies, agronomy, feed budgeting, chainsaw assembly, and numerous other subjects.

Following the completion of the modules, the top five teams advance to the exciting 'face-off' stage, an exhilarating FMG Young Farmer of the Year buzzer-style quiz. In this stage, points are tallied, and the ultimate winners are determined.

As Michael and Zander, along with thirteen other exceptional teams from across New Zealand, gear up for the Grand Final, scheduled to take place in Timaru in July, they are diligently working towards securing the necessary funds for their travel expenses. Raffle initiatives are currently underway, and Watermetrics is actively seeking four additional sponsors to support these talented individuals.

"We value new blood in the farming industry and encourage their skill development," says Watermetrics' Head of Sales and Business Development, Richard Campion. "This event is a showcase for talent and these will be our future leaders which we have no hesitation in encouraging their progress."

Watermetrics eagerly looks forward to supporting Michael and Zander on their journey as they dedicate themselves to honing their skills in preparation for the highly anticipated Grand Final.
